Unit 3: Lesson 7 (April 12/13)

PROMPT: What makes literature worth reading? More specifically, what is the most important feature literature must have to be considered valuable?

Your argument must include:

  • Compelling thesis/claim (answer to the prompt)-- should synthesize your reasons, NOT list them
  • Reasons to support the thesis (at least TWO)-- this will be made into topic sentences for each body paragraph
  • Evidence (from close reading passage AND “Literature IS” article) to support the reasons-- must provide direct quotes + your analysis of them
  • Discussion of an opposing perspective-- in other words, what is another (perhaps closely related) feature of literature that makes it valuable?
  • Effective counter of the opposing perspective that directly supports and builds upon your thesis

Writing should be completed by the END of today's class.

H/W- Reading and role for LIt Circle #5; make sure your graphic organizer is up to date for the 3 articles we have read so far (Carlsen, McGreevy, Heti).
