1) Speed dating (share examples from each lens with a partner).
3) Symbols/Binary Opposites
Make a list of the recurring images/symbols and binary opposites seen thus far in The White Tiger. Share your list with your small group and discuss the following question:
- How is the novel built and structured around these literary elements (formalist lens)? In other words, how do these literary elements help to create meaning (think about the gender, psychoanalytic, and social power lenses as you discuss)?
CHOOSE ONE SYMBOL OR BINARY OPPOSITE
Brainstorm the different ways you could make an image that conveys the meaning behind this symbol/binary opposite.
Things to consider when brainstorming your image (and book jacket):
- color and placement of images
- the size of certain images (how big or small)
- are any out of focus
- are any fully colored and some just black and white
- do any images overlap
As your group discusses what your visual might look like, take note of key details to share with the full class. Also, be sure to explain your image using evidence from the book (find 1-2 key quotes).
Finally, describe your image to the class while explaining the significance behind each detail (placement of an image, coloring, etc.).
H/W Read TWT 191-247 (add evidence to lens tracking chart); start thinking about/brainstorming summative book jacket + gathering evidence/analysis.
